Rotary kiln burner ignition methods and precautions
2025-07-21
The purpose of ignition is to ignite the fuel and produce combustion. The ignition operation of a rotary kiln can be generally divided into the following categories according to its state: cold kiln ignition after kiln shutdown and maintenance, ignition after normal kiln shutdown (non-maintenance state), ignition after short-term shutdown, and immediate ignition after shutdown during production.
There are generally two methods for igniting a rotary kiln using gaseous fuel:
a. Make a fire torch and manually control it. Place the torch (fire source) at the lower end of the rotary kiln burner and ignite it manually.
b. Install a dedicated, automatically controlled ignition source at the outlet end of the burner. A high-energy igniter (burner) device ignites the burner automatically through program control.
When igniting solid fuels such as pulverized coal or heavy oil, since the ignition point of solid fuels is relatively high, ordinary ignition sources cannot easily ignite the fuel in a short time. Therefore, before igniting solid fuel (e.g., pulverized coal burner), a certain amount of firewood is usually piled up inside the rotary kiln, below the outlet of the burner, or diesel fuel is used for ignition. Through the combustion of combustible materials, the temperature of the kiln space is gradually increased to a certain level (fuel ignition point temperature), reaching a temperature that can gradually ignite the fuel and produce automatic combustion.
Basic process of diesel ignition of pulverized coal fuel: Using the high-energy igniter designed by Zhengzhou Zhongwei Environmental Protection Equipment Co., Ltd., first ignite the diesel fuel. After the diesel ignition gun and diesel fuel combustion are stable, gradually open the pulverized coal fuel valve from small to large until the pulverized coal combustion is stable and it is not easy to extinguish before closing the diesel oil gun.
When using solid energy as fuel, when the rotary kiln has already reached a temperature environment that can ignite the fuel, the combustible conditions of the fuel itself should also be considered. For example, the moisture content, fineness, input amount, and ejection speed when using pulverized coal; the viscosity, heating temperature, atomization degree, and ejection pressure when using heavy oil. These are important conditions for ensuring the ignition and combustion of the fuel.
The following figure shows the operation scene inside the kiln when using firewood for ignition.

The following figure shows the scene inside the kiln when the solid fuel is normally ignited and starts to operate.

Therefore, when using gaseous fuel on a rotary kiln, regardless of the ignition method used, the following basic principles must be followed:
1. The fire source must be located below the outlet of the burner, in a position that can directly contact the fuel;
2. Before the fuel is ejected from the burner, the ignition source must exist and have sustainable combustion;
3. The time interval between the ignition source combustion and the fuel ejection should not be too long;
4. A certain negative pressure draft (that will not extinguish the ignition source) must be formed inside the rotary kiln.
5. If the first ignition fails, do not attempt another ignition in a short time or immediately;
6. Make every effort to ensure that the ignition is successful on the first attempt.
Unsuccessful ignition (ignition failure) is common. There are many reasons for failure, and common ones include: unstable ignition gas supply, poor ignition state, electrical system abnormalities, valve position system linkage abnormalities, and fuel transport obstruction. In this case, the basic requirements before the next ignition attempt are:
1. The exhaust fan performs gas displacement inside the kiln, and the exhaust time should not be less than 10 minutes;
2. The fuel source is cut off and is in a state of being prepared again;
3. Determine the cause of the ignition failure;
4. Return to the ignition procedure.
Among these, determining the cause of ignition failure is very important and is the key to ensuring the success of the next ignition.
Pay special attention to safety issues when igniting gaseous fuel. Remember to ignite first, then supply gas, adhering to the "fire waits for gas" principle for safe ignition.
