3.1 Definitions and Classifications

Type

Definition

Oxy-fuel burner

Oxygen concentration in the combustion-supporting gas is higher than that in air (>21%, generally 30-90%)

Pure oxygen burner

The combustion-supporting gas is nearly or equal to 100% oxygen

3.2 Basic Principles

  1. Traditional combustion: Air is used as the combustion-supporting gas, with an oxygen content of approximately 21%, the rest being nitrogen.
  2. Oxy-fuel/pure oxygen combustion:
    • Increase oxygen concentration, reduce nitrogen participation;
    • More complete combustion, higher flame temperature;
    • Concentrated heat, higher efficiency;
    • Reduce NOx and CO2 emissions (especially suitable for carbon capture).

3.3 Structural Composition

  1. Main fuel nozzle (natural gas, coal gas, heavy oil, etc.)
  2. Combustion-supporting gas nozzle (oxy-fuel/pure oxygen)
  3. Mixing chamber (or layered structure)
  4. Ignition device and flame monitor
  5. Cooling protection (water cooling/air cooling required for some high-temperature applications)

3.4 Technical Characteristics

Characteristics

Description

High flame temperature

Can reach 2500~3000℃, far higher than the approximately 1800℃ of air burners

Fast combustion rate

Improve heat exchange efficiency and shorten heating time

Energy saving and consumption reduction

Reduce flue gas volume and lower exhaust heat loss; fuel consumption decreases by 10-40%

Reduce emissions

Reduced NOx generation (low nitrogen content), CO2 reduction suitable for carbon capture

Precise control

Flame shape, intensity, and jet angle can be flexibly designed for different industrial kilns

3.5 Application Fields

Industry

Application equipment or scenarios

Metallurgy

Steel ladle baking furnace, intermediate vessel, heating furnace, annealing furnace, etc.

Non-ferrous metals

Aluminum melting furnace, zinc pot, magnesium furnace, etc.

Glass industry

Melting furnace, annealing furnace

Cement and building materials

Rotary kiln, lime kiln

Waste incineration

High-temperature pyrolysis furnace

Energy and chemical industry

Syngas generator, hydrogenation unit

3.6 Typical Advantages and Economic Benefits

  1. Fuel saving: 10~40% more energy-efficient than air combustion
  2. Increased production capacity: Increase unit time output, furnace temperature can respond quickly
  3. Uniform furnace temperature: Strong thermal radiation, helps to evenly distribute temperature
  4. Extend furnace life: Concentrated combustion area, reduce furnace lining corrosion
  5. Reduce exhaust gas treatment burden: Significantly reduce exhaust gas volume

3.7 Existing Risk Points and Countermeasures

Risk points

Countermeasures

High cost (oxygen source)

Use oxy-fuel instead of pure oxygen, use it with an oxygen generation system

Shorter furnace lining life (high temperature)

Use high-temperature refractory materials, optimize flame distribution

Complex control (easy local overheating)

Precise ratio control system, staged oxygen supply, flow regulation

High safety requirements (pure oxygen explosion risk)

Add oxygen explosion-proof device, set oxygen concentration over-limit alarm
