Rotary kiln burner: “Normal flame,” “High flame,” and “Low flame”

2026-06-10

The so‑called “normal fire” refers to the appropriate firing temperature. Generally, a “normal fire” exhibits the following characteristics within the kiln:

① The flame inside the kiln is bright, well‑shaped, steady and vigorous, with a certain length.

② The material exhibits a slight whitish hue; at the firing zone, it tumbles readily, forming clinker with fine, uniform granules, achieving a certain lifting height and possessing a defined bulk density.

③ The “dark shadow” remains stable in a fixed position, and the boundary between the high-temperature region and the “dark shadow” is not very distinct.

④The color of the kiln skin is essentially the same as that of the material.

The so‑called “overfire” occurs when the firing temperature is excessively high. Typically, during overfire, the flame appears white and glaring; the material at the fire zone is carried up along the kiln shell to a greater height, with insufficient tumbling and poor fluidity, resulting in coarse clinker granules that may even agglomerate into lumps. If the fire is too intense, the material in the firing zone can sinter into dense masses that fail to tumble with the kiln lining, leading to “flowing fire” and severely compromising both the kiln skin and the refractory lining.

The so‑called “low fire” refers to a firing temperature that is too low. Under low‑fire conditions, the flame appears reddish, and the “black shadow” shifts toward the kiln head; in severe cases, the raw material at the rear can surge forward like water. Because operators’ color‑discrimination abilities and the shade of their viewing glasses vary, their assessments of flame intensity may differ. Therefore, viewing glasses of uniform shade should be used. In addition, flame color should be adjusted according to the refractoriness of the material being fired, in order to prevent undesirable outcomes.
