Common forms of damage analysis of rotary kiln refractory bricks

2025-07-04

Damage to the refractory lining of a rotary kiln often affects the continuity of production and is a common equipment accident. The causes of such accidents include design structure, refractory material quality, construction quality, and operation and maintenance. Comprehensive analysis of various lining damage accidents helps identify common causes, allowing for proactive preventive measures to minimize accidents.

01 Common Forms of Rotary Kiln Lining Damage:

Due to the combined effects of mechanical stress under rotating conditions, material friction, thermal stress, airflow, and chemical erosion, the refractory lining of a rotary kiln often suffers from the following problems:

(1) The lifting blocks, under the combined effects of mechanical rotation, centrifugal force, high temperature, and impact friction from stones, can lead to distortion, refractory material loss, and thickness reduction of the prefabricated blocks, causing deformation and detachment of the refractory bricks filling the gaps between the lifting blocks.

(2) Melting damage of the high-temperature calcined layer.

(3) Large temperature differences in the kiln cause dust to be sintered into clumps and adhere to the refractory material surface. When the kiln rotates, gravity separates the material, causing partial peeling of the refractory material, thinning of the brick lining, increased kiln temperature, and varying degrees of changes in the steel structure, reducing the service life of the kiln.

02 Probability of Various Refractory Lining Damage

A German refractory technology company conducted extensive experimental research on used refractory materials and statistically analyzed the probability of the main causes of damage:

(1) Mechanical stress accounts for 37%: Caused by kiln body deformation and thermal expansion of bricks.

(2) Chemical erosion accounts for 36%: Caused by the erosion of clinker silicates and alkali salts.

(3) Thermal stress accounts for 27%: Caused by overheating and thermal shock.

With different kiln types, operations, and lining positions within the kiln, the roles of the above three factors vary, mainly depending on Rotary kiln burner The ejected flame, the kiln material, and the deformation of the kiln body during operation, causing the lining to withstand various different stresses.
