Red Soil Nickel Ore Rotary Kiln

2025-08-30

1. Working Principle

The principle of laterite nickel ore rotary kiln calcination mainly involves reducing nickel oxide in the ore to metallic nickel through high-temperature reduction reactions, while removing impurity elements. Process flow As follows:

‌ Raw Material Pretreatment ‌
Laterite nickel ore needs to be crushed and ground to 50 ~ 150mm particle size, and mixed evenly with auxiliary materials such as limestone and anthracite.

‌ Drying and Preheating ‌
The material first enters the low-temperature zone of the rotary kiln (about 100℃ ), removing free water and crystalline water; then the temperature rises to 800℃ approximately, further removing crystalline water and undergoing slight oxidation-reduction reactions.

‌ High-Temperature Roasting and Reduction ‌
When the temperature rises to 900℃ , reducing agents such as anthracite burn to produce heat and reducing gases (such as CO ), which react with nickel oxide in the ore ( NiO ):
NiO + C → Ni + CO
At the same time, CaO produced by limestone decomposition CaO adjusts the atmosphere inside the furnace to promote the reduction reaction.

‌ Metal Aggregation and Melting ‌
As the temperature rises above 1000℃ metal particles aggregate to form sponge-like slag nickel-iron, which is finally discharged in a molten state.

2. Burner Selection

  1. Gas Burners

Fuels: natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, blast furnace gas, coke oven gas, light hydrocarbon gas, and other chemical tail gases;

  1. Oil Burners

Fuels: diesel, methanol, heavy oil, alcohol-based fuels, etc.

  1. Pulverized Coal Burners

Fuel: pulverized coal

Currently, natural gas burners are mostly used.
